Rest in Peace: Avonte Oquendo

The Tragic Death Of Avonte Oquendo: How A School Lost A Vulnerable, Autistic Teenager - seattlepi.com

News broke Tuesday that human remains from the East River belong to an autistic 14-year-old who had been missing since October — and who vanished when his teachers should have been watching him.
Avonte Oquendo slipped away from school after lunch on Oct. 4, even though he had a reputation for wandering away during transitions and anindividualized education plan that noted this tendency, his family's lawyer David Perecmanpreviously told Business Insider
There is still a lot we don't know about what happened to Oquendo after he was lost and how he ultimately died. There are no obvious signs of foul play, the New York Post reported. We do know the teen, who could not speak, was afraid of the water, and that his parents don't know how he ended up in the river, Perecman told NBC News. The Post also noted his remains were found with Fruit of the Loom underwear that was too large for Oquendo, leading his family's lawyer to speculate that somebody may have had the boy for a few days.

Autistic boy given tracker device after disappearance - National News | TVNZ

Autistic boy given tracker device after disappearance - National News | TVNZ

Tracking device a silver lining
A silver lining to Ryan's ordeal is that he is now the first Wellingtonian to own a special tracker designed for people with autism.
The Wandatrack is a small device that emits a personalised signal.
It has been designed to give peace of mind to families of people with dementia, autism or other conditions that cause them to regularly wander off.
Ryan's device resembles a pendant but they can also be made to look like a watch or key chain.
Harmer said the technology had been available in Wellington for only a few months but he hoped the devices would become commonplace.
"It reduces our search time massively," he said.
"[On average it takes] 20 searchers up to eight hours, but this would see one to two people searching for maybe an hour."
The devices cost $280 and replacing the battery every six months costs $30.
The recently established Wellington Wander Search Charitable Trust administers the devices and raises funds to cover their cost.
They also ask for a small monthly donation from the user.
Peel said he had looked for something similar in China and other parts of the world without realising he could source one at home.
"One of the good things about this bizarre situation, that I'd never want to find myself in, is Ryan now has a Wandatrack," he said.

Severely autistic 11 old lost 3 times in 3 weeks from 'Safe' and 'Secure' School

If the school didn't even notice that he was missing for 2 hours, that says a lot about the level of education being provided.  Pitiful. To lose the kid 3 times in 3 weeks shows that the school is clueless about autism and the associated dangers.

Parents' fury as autistic boy goes missing from school three times in three weeks - Parentdish
A furious dad is keeping his 11-year-old son, who is autistic, at home after he went missing from the 'safe and secure' Lindsworth School three times in as many weeks.

Metal worker Martin Breakwell from Yardley, Birmingham, describes his son Ryan as being a 'severely autistic' boy with Asperger Syndrome and ADHD.

He claims Ryan went missing early in September, then on another occasion where he was found in a phone box two miles away phoning the police for help, and, most recently, last Tuesday, where he turned up in an estate agents' office.

He said the school took 'the best part of two hours' to realise he was missing on September 18.

Martin, 42, said the school had been recommended to him by the education department because it would be 'safe and secure' for Ryan.
