Police failed in their duty to family of missing boy with autism who was later found drowned

Police failed in their duty to family of missing boy who was later found drowned - Northern Ireland, Local & National - Belfasttelegraph.co.uk

Police failed to treat the disappearance of a “vulnerable” boy urgently and should have started looking for him more quickly, a Police Ombudsman’s report has found.

Nine officers have been disciplined over the search operation for the boy.

Enniskillen teenager, Daniel Mohan, drowned in April 2010 after going missing from his home.

The body of the 16-year-old, who had learning difficulties and showed signs of autism, was found in Lough Erne a week after he disappeared.

Daniel’s mother, Tracey McMulkin, expressed misgivings about the police investigation from the outset.

She and his father, Martin, vowed to “find out the truth” and made a formal complaint to the Police Ombudsman’s Office regarding alleged “police inaction, incivility and the conduct of the senior investigating officer and the family liaison officer”.

The Police Ombudsman launched an extensive investigation, which lasted over a year and a half and addressed a total of 17 complaints by the family.

Fredericksburg.com - Benefit set for boy who was lost

Fredericksburg.com - Benefit set for boy who was lost

A community came together in October to help find a Caroline County boy with autism who was missing in the woods for six days.

Now, two separate groups are asking the community to support 9-year-old Robert Wood Jr. and a volunteer who suffered a heart attack during the search.

A benefit dance will be held tonight to raise money to help offset the medical bills for Robert and 50-year-old Rodney Clifton of Henrico County, who suffered a heart attack while volunteering to search for Robert on Oct. 27.

On Sunday, a fundraising dinner is planned in Caroline to raise money for an organization that helps locate missing people.

The dance, sponsored by the Frog Level Volunteer Rescue Squad, will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Dawn Community Center, 16315 Dawn Blvd.

Robert, who celebrated a birthday last week, has returned to a somewhat normal life after his adventure in the woods of a Hanover County park. He is back home with his mother in Ruther Glen and has returned to the Faison School for Autism in Richmond.

Robert wandered off on Oct. 23 while walking along a trail in North Anna Battlefield Park in Doswell with his father, his younger brother, Ryan, and his father's girlfriend. Ryan, 7, also has autism.
