50 percent of the cases children with autism will wander at least once

Protecting autistic children from wandering off | The Autism News

“We see that in 50 percent of the cases children with autism will have at least one time in life where they elope,” said Dr. Maxim.

Dr. Maxim says children with autism typically run away because they like to explore, they are feeling anxious, or for no reason at all. She says this is a major problem.

“During the elopement they are at risk of drowning, of getting into a car accident,” said Dr. Maxim.

EMFinders Bracelets for Missing Ohio Seniors and Children with Autism

High-Tech Bracelets Locate Missing Ohio Seniors, Autistic Children

To track down autistic children or senior citizens who may go missing, an Ohio police department is supplying wrist bracelets to its community that — with 911 assistance and cell phone technology — can triangulate the bracelet wearer’s location.

The Rocky River Police Department in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, acquired 15 of the tracking bracelets and demonstrated the technology to its citizens last week. Police Chief Kelly Stillman said Rocky River is the first city in Ohio to offer the bracelets, which are available free of charge (with a monthly activation fee) to those in the community who need them.

Stillman said nearly 30 percent of Rocky River’s population is senior citizens.

The bracelets — by EMFinders based in Frisco, Texas — are the size of a wristwatch. Two people are required to attach and take the device off a user’s wrist, Stillman said.

Autism Tracking Devices Alone Can't Keep Kids with Autism Safe

Tracking Devices Alone Can't Keep Autistic Kids Safe

Care2 blogger Angela Braun wrote about summer safety and the Mason Alert just about a month ago as it was starting to get warm. Summer hasn't quite started but already there've been more than a few reports about autistic children wandering, sometimes tragically. WAFB reports that 7-year-old John Hogan, Jr., of North Hogan Creek, Louisiana, was found drowned in a creek on Monday morning; he had been missing since Sunday afternoon and had just moved into the neighborhood. FOX News reports that a 6-year-old autistic boy was found, wearing only a diaper, on a highway off-ramp in Phoenix. He had only been missing for a few minutes and, fortunately, someone called the police immediately.3

Autistic boy found hours after another electronic child-tracking device fails - The Denver Post

Autistic boy found hours after another electronic child-tracking device fails - The Denver Post

AURORA — For the second time in as many weeks, investigators looking for an autistic child wearing an electronic device designed to send a signal if its wearer goes missing say the beacon failed.

Aurora police said Brandon Wells, 11, was wearing a Life Trak device on his ankle when he left his home near East Hampden Avenue and South Picadilly Street about 9:30 p.m. Sunday through a second-story window.

But the device was not sending a signal, investigators said.

On May 30, police activated the system designed to locate a Life Trak beacon that Kristina Vlassenko, 10, was wearing on her wrist, but they were unable to receive a signal. Her body was found the next day in murky water at an Arvada construction site.

Brandon was luckier. An Aurora park ranger spotted the silhouette of a boy inside the fence at the Plains Conservation Center, about a mile from his home, around 4 a.m. Monday. It was Brandon.

Autistic Child Found Wandering Along I-17 Access Road

PHOENIX - An autistic child was found wandering along a Phoenix highway off-ramp Monday morning.

A good samaritan helped out and now police have a lot of questions.

The good news is that the boy was not hurt and he's back home with his mother. It's a happy ending to a frightening day for the child.

Police tried talking with the 6-year-old in the back seat of a patrol car while officers searched for his parents. The boy was found wandering alone on the southbound frontage road near I-17 and Thomas, wearing nothing but a diaper Monday morning.

"It's crazy..I watch my kids really good..they don't go out of the house, they stay in the house..I would not let my kids run around in diapers outside," said Lupe Taylor, a neighbor.

Witnesses did nothing to save missing girl with autism!!!

A 9 yo autistic girl went missing, there were witnesses, and they did NOTHING… — Single Mom on a Budget

At around 3:30pm on Monday night a 9 year old autistic girl, Kristina, went missing from her home in Arvada. I saw news reports, I saw the tweets coming from the local news stations (here is the news story)…

Tuesday morning at around 8:30am I was taking Jonesie to school and had Joe with me too. The DJ’s on Alice 105.9 were talking about the girl and the fact that she was still missing.

And then…

And then a woman called. And she said something along the lines of “I saw this girl last night at around 4:30ish at 58thand Kipling.” (Let me tell you, this is a very busy intersection.) BJ (radio DJ) asked her if she was wearing a red Mickey Mouse t-shirt, as the missing girl was reportedly wearing, and the woman said she was. She went on to say how the girl looked lost, and she was kind of in the street. AND THEN she said she honked her horn. You know… to get the girl out of the street so she didn’t get hit.
