Facing Autism in New Brunswick: Autism Can End Lives: Wandering and Drowning

Facing Autism in New Brunswick: Autism Can End Lives: Wandering and Drowning

Those who don't believe that autism can be a deadly disorder, who believe that wandering from home and drowning is not a problem that should be associated with autism, will want to skip reports of yet another death by drowning of an autistic child that wandered from the safety of his home. This time the drowning occurred in Cushing, Oklahoma.

The evidence gathered does not justify the filing of criminal charges, said Lee and Cushing Police Chief Terry Brannan in a prepared statement. The evidence indicated the drowning was an unfortunate accident, Lee said.

Blake Murrell died April 19. His body was found in a pond at a Cushing park hours after he was reported missing from his home nearby.

Police investigated the death in part because Murrell was left unattended for an hour and a half the morning he went missing.

The Mason Alert and Summer Safety For Kids With Autism

The Mason Alert and Summer Safety For Kids With Autism

As the school year draws to a close, most of us with kids start thinking about the needs associated with a child's transition to summer, especially when it comes to the issue of summer safety. With autistic children, this can mean much more than the typical preventatives of starting a sunscreeen routine, teaching water safety and discussing stranger danger. More than ever, parents, educators, advocacy organizations, law-enforcement and the technology industry are realizing the urgent need for programs to help keep kids with autism safer.

Wandering and drowning are leading causes of death for children with autism, who often have limited communication abilities, impulsive behaviors and an impaired sense of danger. Research confirms that drowning is the leading cause of death among autistic children and and an autisitc child is more than twice as likely to drown as a typical child.

Autism Roaming Worries

Roaming by children with autism worries parents - KansasCity.com

Half of children with autism are prone to wandering, sometimes for hours, a dangerous behavior pattern that can start before kindergarten, a national survey has quantified for the first time.

The extent of the wandering phenomenon was revealed in a survey of 856 parents whose children have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

Half of the respondents reported their children not only have wandered from home but were gone long enough to raise alarm.

Conducted by the Interactive Autism Network, an online autism research project overseen by the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Md., the survey is the first to attempt to quantify the problem. The institute is affiliated with Johns Hopkins University.

Two out of three parents reported their children had a “close call” with a traffic-related incident. One-third said a child nearly drowned. Fifty-eight percent reported wandering as the most stressful of all autism-related behaviors.

On April 19, the body of Blake Murrell, a 4-year-old with autism who had wandered from his home in Cushing, Okla., was found in a pond.

In 2010, 10 children with autism died after wandering off, according to the Krieger institute.
